Atiq Rahman

City of Markham

“Atiq was the person who patiently coached me and explained me the deliverables in every step of the way. Even in his extremely busy schedule, he never showed any sign of unwillingness ever and always responded positively to my queries. He always offered attention and time, giving me the opportunity to learn and grow and ask more questions. This is a remarkable trait of him and deserves high admiration. I have many years of international experience and worked with many supervisors before – surely he ranks among the top few. He spent many hours in explaining the functions of the department and the organization as a whole, as well as teaching me Canadian office culture, communication practices and specific report writing techniques. Often inquiring about my job search, he provided career counseling and guidelines as to what should be the right approach when job searching or writing resumes/cover letters. He even helped me to connect with one of his friends who is also a civil engineer and get advice from him. Facing the reality of getting frustrated by not getting a job, Atiq even allowed me to share my personal feelings with him and he never stopped encouraging me. Atiq himself started to work for City of Markham through Career Edge many years back and he inspired me by sharing his own past experiences. A true mentor in every form, I firmly believe that he deserves to be nominated I would not hesitate a bit but to nominate him as ‘Mentor of the Year’ and wish for his continued success in future.”

My mentor Chris added huge value to my internship period by working side by side with me in building the e-learning module, invited me to lead and pilot the module, which I developed, allowing me to gain a vast amount of contacts and build an encouraging and supportive network. "My mentor demonstrated her responsibility to build my career in Canada through her dedication. She introduced me to her colleagues and other functions that I worked with later. I learned about specific practices in banks, communications, dealing with customers and team work. She provided me with the opportunity to present reports, issues and analysis dashboards to different functional representatives every week. I was exposed to the multi-functional forums. She encouraged me to participate in company events, informed and shared invitations which helped me to know the organizational values and build a professional network. My mentor helped me to build relationship with the team and other functions by exposing me and my skills. I was given the orientations on values and client management styles which seem to have worked very well for me. Today I am back here in RBC right after the internship to coordinate a significant project. It is extremely difficult for a new immigrant to settle down in a new country and cultural environment. Sabrina Cioffi

Moneris Solutions

“My mentor is very dedicated to my professional development throughout my time here at Moneris. We have weekly check-ins where I'm able to debrief on my progress, ask for feedback on projects I'm working on, and get direction for next steps. I ask questions without fear and get regular feedback. I've learned a lot about the industry and workplace dynamics from Sabrina. She is approachable and understanding. She doesn't doubt my abilities, which has made me more confident in my skills and more excited to excel in this role. My on-the-job training is like a dream come true. After graduating from my undergrad and not getting a position related to my skills, I felt lost. That's all changed at my internship here. I am given the chance to apply the skills that I learned in the classroom every day. Sabrina has also given me plenty networking opportunities so far and provided suggestions into how to look for internal opportunities that match my interests and skill set, as well as tips on how to broaden my search. Sabrina is the first professional mentor I've ever had. She is supportive but provides constructive criticism as well. She is there when I need her but believes in my skills enough to not be over my shoulder watching me. She is the perfect balance for me. I am very glad I met her and thank Career Edge for the opportunity to work alongside her and be mentored by her.”

Sandeep Grover

GE Healthcare
(2 Nominations)

“Best Mentor/coach I ever had, because of his help and support I could learn a lot and now I am able to succeed as a business analyst at other companies.”

“My former manager, mentor & coach always made it a point to provide recognition for a job well done, and encouraged me to take breaks when he knew that I was over-working myself. Many managers underestimate how much of an impact this makes to the morale of an intern. As a new entrant to the workforce, it’s so easy to lose yourself in work in an attempt to “make your mark.” Importantly, Sandeep’s ongoing support during my time as intern and his reminders to me to take breaks helped protect my mental health (something that – judging from my peer group’s experiences – is often overlooked). Although Sandeep is no longer my manager, he continues to be my mentor and coach at GE Healthcare. He is always available with invaluable career advice and opportunities at work (through passion projects) that not only help me grow my skill set, but also help me grow as a person. And it’s not just me he mentors! Sandeep truly cares for people and wants his team and other members of this organization to succeed. As Director of IT, he doesn’t have a lot of (read: any) free time but always, always, always makes time for anyone who knocks on his door looking for advice/direction. I cannot imagine there being a better candidate for this award. I truly hope you will consider him for this award.”

“Wayne is a very inspirational mentor in sharing his previous experiences and career lessons learned. Whenever I present my interests in specific areas to him, he always offers good suggestions in what directions I can look into in order to gain more technical skills. When I was offered a new career opportunity, Wayne provided great support; he offered me good tips and shares his experiences with the private and consulting sector. Wayne is also a very patient coach. Without an extensive engineering background, I sometimes found certain projects a bit challenging (for example, electrical design and layout in solar projects). Wayne always took the time to sit down with me and explain all the technical points with very simple knowledge. This really helped me to learn the technical terms and processes in the renewable energy industry.”

Yasmin Parodi

City of Toronto

“A few months into her term with us, Yasmin was handed full responsibility for a major project. I supported her with regular check-ins, as-needed advice and feedback, and project management support. Yasmin quickly took the reins of the project and ran with it, to the point where the need for my support dwindled significantly (regular check-ins continued to ensure that all was on track.) Yasmin demonstrated exceptional initiative, project and people skills, and creative talent throughout this project, increasing our level of organization significantly. As her term came to an end, she created a thorough work plan and other transition documents for the person taking over her duties - all without being asked. Overall, she made a great contribution to our work here at the City. I was very sad to see her go.”
